In Grandma Slavka’s day, meals were made from whatever meat was available at home. Not every household had cattle, but they did have chickens. That’s why chicken soup was made more often than beef soup.

Since time immemorial, chicken soup has been considered a tonic and a remedy that restored strength to the sick, the anemic, and new mothers. This is still true today—its intense aroma and rich flavor comfort us, satisfy us, and give us strength.

The recipe for chicken soup is part of the Kovačev family tradition. Even today, they prepare it just as Grandmother Slavko’s grandmother taught her: using chickens that spend their days in the meadows and fresh vegetables from nearby gardens. This chicken soup, simmered slowly and with love, will bring you the scent of days gone by and evoke memories of a carefree youth and Grandma’s hospitality.
